At Lodz Design Festival we met Jay Shafer, who visited the event with a lecture titled „Size matters”. What he has talked about prompted us to reflect on the „small living” theme. Jay Shafer is considered to be an expert in the field of „small living”and a precursor of „Tiny House People” movement, which call for reduction of living space to a minimum. Since 1997 he’s been living in a very small houses. The first one he made on his own, he called Tumbleweed. At its 8m² he has arranged fireplace, kitchen, office and bedroom in the attic. Today Shafer designs houses for other people and sell them promoting the philosophy of the minimalist lifestyle. The smallest house he produced had 6m², the largest – 71m². During the lecture Jay said that in some ways the movement is a response to the crisis in the real estate market and that’s one of the reasons for growing number of his customers. Among his statements we liked the most the one that: the house does not have to be big – it has to be well designed.

Na festiwalu Łódź Design spotkaliśmy Jay’a Shafera, który gościł tam z wykładem pod tytułem „Rozmiar ma znaczenie”. To co opowiadał skłoniło nas do zastanowienia się nad tematem „small living”, w której to dziedzinie jest on ekspertem. Jay Shafer uważany jest za prekursora ruchu „Tiny House People” postulującego ograniczenie zamieszkiwanej przestrzeni do minimum oraz eksperta w dziedzinie „small living”. Od 1997 roku żyje w bardzo małych domach. Pierwszy który sam wykonał nazwał Tumbleweed. Na jego 8m² powierzchni znalazły się kominek, kuchnia, biuro i sypialnia na poddaszu. Dziś Shafer projektuje domki dla innych i sprzedaje je promując filozofię minimalistycznego stylu życia. Najmniejszy wyprodukowany przez niego dom liczył 6m², największy – 71m². W trakcie wykładu Jay powiedział, że w pewnym sensie jego ruch jest odpowiedzią na kryzys w nieruchomościach i to jest jedną z przyczyn dla której znajduje coraz szersze grono odbiorców. Nam najbardziej podobało się jego stwierdzenie, że dom nie musi być duży – ważne aby był dobrze zaprojektowany.
